Planning for the big day is in full swing and you’ve already made a number of key decisions about your upcoming Toronto wedding. You’ve decided you want a DJ instead of a band—or possibly a band and a DJ, depending on how grand your plans are—and you’ve put some thought into which one is the best fit for you and your wedding.
Before you make the call, though, it’s important you know how to work with a wedding DJ. The best wedding DJs will be able to walk you through the process and answer any questions, but the process will go faster if you know what you’re doing.
For an easier time working with your wedding DJ, follow this advice:
Book your Wedding DJ Early
Wedding DJs are pretty busy people. People get married every day. Which means most wedding DJs are booked at least six months in advance. The busiest are often booked a year in advance, which means you should be making phone calls sooner rather than later.
Create a Playlist in Advance
A great wedding DJ can help you make a great playlist, but they’ll be thrilled to see that you’ve already put some effort in. Even knowing three or four songs you absolutely must hear and a couple you really want to hear is a good start. Having a well developed playlist will make the process of finalizing it with your DJ quicker and give them more time to find the songs you want to hear.
Create a Do Not Play List
If you’ve decided to give the DJ some freedom with the playlist or you’re going to let the DJ take requests from guests at the wedding, it’s important to create a “do not play” list. If there’s a song you or your partner absolutely can’t stand, it should be on the list. You should also let the DJ know what the guests will be like and whether or not he’s allowed to play songs with profanity in them.
Have a Program
Your wedding program doesn’t have to be fully developed or finalized. Even a set of point form notes explaining the basics will be helpful to your wedding DJ. Knowing when things happen will make it easier for them to keep the music appropriate to what’s going on at any given time. It’s also important that they know how long they’ll be at your wedding so they can give you an accurate price up front.
Working with a wedding DJ shouldn’t be stressful. A great wedding DJ can make up for a lack of preparation, but working with any wedding DJ will always be easier if you’re prepared and know what you need to help your DJ create the best experience possible for you at your wedding.
