How to Create Your Wedding Playlist

It’s a good idea to start thinking about your wedding playlist even before you hire a DJ. After all, your wedding is supposed to be the happiest day of your life. That means it definitely needs the right music. And while a great wedding DJ should be able to provide great advice when it comes to your playlist, there’s no way they can know your musical taste as well as you do.

Creating your own playlist before you go to a wedding DJ—or at least thinking about it and writing down a few songs you know you’ll want to hear—will also make working with your chosen wedding DJ a lot easier.

You might want to hear all childhood favourites or you might think it’s better to go with recent hits you’re obsessed with right now. A mix of both is often the best idea, but there are other factors you should consider when you’re choosing your wedding playlist.

Here are two things you should consider when making your playlist:

Who’s at your wedding?

You and your fiancé probably like a lot of the same things, and that includes music. But there are probably some songs you don’t agree on. While songs you both love are always best, if you’re not in love with your partner’s favourite song, you might want to play it anyway. After all, it’s as much their day as it is yours.

Of course, there will be plenty of other people at your wedding. Some of them will probably be older relatives and children in the family. Keeping songs with a lot of profanity out of your playlist—or saving them for near the end when children are likely to have left for their beds—might be a good idea if you want to keep these relatives happy.

Timing

When you play each song is just as important as what songs you choose for your wedding playlist. Each part of the night has a different feel and requires a different kind of music. Early in the night when you want more discussion than dancing, slower, classical music is often a great choice.

Every style of music is also best suited to a different style of dance. Throughout the night you’ll want a good mix of songs you can slow dance to with your honey and faster songs that make your heart race. If you or your partner is really into dancing outside of weddings, you might also choose music based on what you usually dance to.

Of course, a great wedding DJ will be able to help you figure this all out, but creating your own playlist is part of the fun of throwing your own event! Start thinking about your playlist now and by the time your wedding arrives you’ll know you made the right decisions.
